If you are new to martial arts, American Kenpo Karate and Muay Thai can sound very different—and they are. But you do not need to be athletic, flexible, or experienced before taking a beginner class in either one.

At Burning Tree Mixed Martial Arts in Owings Mills, we teach both. Here is a practical way to understand what you are likely to practice and how to decide where to begin.

What you learn in American Kenpo

American Kenpo emphasizes structured self-defense concepts, striking technique, movement, timing, and responses to different situations. In class, students work on understanding what a technique does and why body position matters.

For beginners who enjoy learning sequences, refining details, and building a broad foundation over time, Kenpo can be a rewarding fit.

What you learn in Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a striking art known for punches, kicks, knees, elbows, and clinch concepts. Beginner classes typically spend time on stance, guard, balance, basic strikes, and controlled pad or partner drills.

If you like an energetic striking workout and the satisfaction of improving a few core movements through repetition, Muay Thai may appeal to you.

The differences at a glance

Neither art is automatically better for every student. They emphasize different skills, and the experience also depends on the class, instructor, and the student's goals.

  • Kenpo: structured self-defense applications, technique combinations, and movement principles
  • Muay Thai: striking fundamentals, balance, rhythm, and repeated pad or partner drills
  • Both: coordination, consistent practice, respect for training partners, and gradual progress

Which should a brand-new student choose?

Start with your goals. Interested in varied self-defense scenarios and technique details? Try Kenpo. Excited by striking drills and conditioning? Try Muay Thai. If you are unsure, attending a beginner session can teach you more than reading comparisons.

You are not choosing a lifelong identity on your first day. The best first class is one you feel comfortable returning to. Our team can also help you find an age-appropriate class on the current schedule.
